Umno defers Penanti meeting to Monday

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

From Suara KeADILan Online

By SK English News

Prime Minister Najib Razak will chair a meeting of the Umno political bureau on Monday to decide if the party should contest in the Penanti by-election due to be polled on May 31.

The meeting was initially scheduled for 5 pm on Thursday, but has been postponed to 1 pm on Monday, according to the Umno website. No reasons were given but possibly, it is because Najib is still in Brunei on an official two-day visit

Other leaders who will attend the meeting include Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, party vice-presidents Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Hishammuddin Hussein and Shafie Apdal.

The bureau will also be discussing other political developments, the website had said.

Sweet vindication

Penanti is a small state seat located on mainland Penang. It fell vacant after PKR leader Fairus Khairuddin resigned amid allegations of corruption. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has since cleared him of any wrongdoing.

Late on Tuesday night, Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim named Mansor Othman as the Pakatan Rakyat candidate for Penanti. A former lecturer at Universiti Sains Malaysia, the 56-year old Mansor is also PKR Penang deputy chief.

If he wins, he is expected to also clinch the Penang deputy chief minister (I) post, again vacated by Fairus who has insisted on quitting despite having cleared his name.

The 33-year old received thunderous applause when he went on stage to join Anwar, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and PKR president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail in congratulating Mansor, silencing rumour-mongers from the Umno-BN especially its media that there was a rift.

“I have gone through hell and back. This shows no matter how hard the conspirators tried to destroy me, the truth prevailed. People can always conspire and plot, but only God decides,” Fairus said.

MANSOR OTHMAN HAS A TASK AHEAD, SAID ANWAR

At the gathering with Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Penanti last night, Mansor Othman was officially named by Anwar Ibrahim as the party’s candidate for Penanti by-election.

Mansor Othman was introduced at length by the de facto leader of the People’s Justice Party as an experienced leader of intellectual background who had also served as a researcher for Universities and other institutions in the past. He was the political secretary to Anwar when he was the deputy Prime Minister in the late 90’s.

Anwar hoped that with his vast experience and standing, Mansor shold be able to assist Guan Eng, the Penang Chief Minister in the administration of the Penang State Government.

He added that if Mansor is elected in Penanti, he will be PKR’s choice to be the next First Chief Minister of Penang. He qualified it by saying that it was the Chief Minister’s right to choose his Deputy, but PKR will recommend Othman to him. He said this was just like the DAP’s Selangor Exco Members were decided by the DAP.

Anwar has an exchange with Guan Eng whilst Chou Looked on. Behind the Chief Minister is Mansor. Earlier In his speech, Guan Eng emphasied that whoever was chosen by PKR as a candidate would receive full support from the Pakatan Rakyat as they share a common objective in struggle which is one of social reform.

Earlier on, Dato Zahrain appealed to all the party members to work together to ensure a greater victory for the party and Pakatan Rakyat in Penanti. He also snapped at UMNO Assemblymen who seemed to be quick and eager to sweep all the issues of corruption under the carpet in the Penang State Assembly.

The Wanita Wing in Permatang Pauh is strategically quite a force to be reckoned with.

Yusmadi, Angkatan Muda KeADILan leader of Penang and MP for Balik Pulau, advocated for election as a must for democracy, whereby no excuse of costs is justifiable not to have one, appearently in reference to Najib’s inertia to this by-election.

Pakatan to form shadow cabinet committees

Monday, April 27th, 2009

From Suara KeADILan Online

By Wong Choon Mei

Pakatan Rakyat plans to form shadow cabinet committees to track the performance of arch rival Umno-Barisan Nasional and offer voters alternative policies, ways and means to govern the country more effectively than it currently is.

Said Keadilan Strategic Affairs director Tian Chua: “This is a form of collective responsibility. It will also build teamwork, get Pakatan MPs working together and bring out the best talent for the country.

“This is not about who gets what. That is the outmoded Umno-BN model – fighting for ministries and the number of ministerships. Instead, this is about what we can all do to come up with better solutions for the country.”

Better governance and policies

While the Prime Minister Najib Razak’s coalition has been quick to take aim at the Pakatan for not naming individual ministers, political watchers said it was unnecessary.

What was more important was whether Pakatan as a whole could offer Malaysians better governance and policies.

To do that, Pakatan should gauge the most suitable person for each portfolio rather than make mere political appointments, much the way the Umno-BN was doing, they said.

“This is an excellent first step forward. Out of the cabinet committees formed, leaders of proven capability will emerge who will become future cabinet ministers,” said Ramon Navaratnam, chairman of Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute.

“It is very useful to get this process going, with specialisation in each area of expertise Not only will it help to build a good, strong cabinet with hands-on people in charge, it will also create more active and meaningful debate in Parliament. This can only benefit the Malaysian public,” Ramon added.

“We will not be rushed into any decisions as important as these. If there is an emergency and we need to respond, rest assured we can jump to the occasions. Pakatan has many seasoned politicians and expert practitioners. But until then, our official stand for now is we will decide on the individual shadow ministers when we are fully in power,” said Tian.

May 23 Nomination And 31 Polling For Penanti

Monday, April 27th, 2009

By the Administrator

The Malaysian Election Commission announced this morning that it is May 23rd (Saturday) for nomination and May 31st (Sunday) for polling for the Penanti by-election.

No campaigning and no polling booths was allowed to be set up by any parties, it  was so announced.

UMNO will announce soon as to whether it will contest. In independent, an ex-Wanita leader of Penang PKR, and the Malaysian socialist Party, have indicated their respective interest to contest.

For PKR, no official announcement has been made thus far, though Dr. Mansor Othman, the Penang PKR Deputy Chairman, is widely speculated to be the candidate.

According to Lim Guan Eng, the Penang Chief Minister, who appeared not at ease, he was yet to be informed about the PKR choice of the Penanti candidate.

He added that whoever is elected in Penanti is not necessary to be the next First Deputy Chief Minister of Penang. When he was asked about PAS Permatang Pauh Division’s keen interest to contest in Penanti, he said it was up to PAS to discuss it with PKR.
